Deep backgame - a philosophical question.

My guess would be that you'd need some special algorithm / neural net that only kicks in when certain conditions have been satisfied. A minimum number of checkers back and a minimum pip-count deficit for example could trigger a BG algorithm; you could also consider a snake algorithm with special triggers.
I think that BG requires a long-term strategy that is difficult to arrive at by just playing (indeed not clear to me that a neural net would stumble on the right way to play trule deep backgames). Maybe some pre-set strategies and a genetic algorithm could be a useful approach.
That said, I believe people make too much of poor bot play in backgames. In more normal backgames I think that for example GNU is good and reliable - in any case, better than I.
