Well said, Barry, although "Palin prime" would seem more appropriate

And I'm not talking about Michael Palin, of Monty Python fame. I do think that something more than the feelings of the victim are required. For example, the term "niggardly" has nothing to do etymologically with that other "N" word, and it would be a shame to lose the word simply because of its aural similarity. (That's assuming it's being used properly and not as a stand-in for the "n" word.) In the case of "kamikaze", there are two potential classes of "victims" to be considered -- Japanese and the families of those (most American) seamen who were killed by kamikaze pilots. I doubt that either group considers the term humorous.
Finally, although I have no use for political correctness, I'm continually amazed by those who can't understand how anyone could take offense at a commonly used term. In this connection I'd note that while the "N" word is no longer used in polite or even not-so polite society (viz., bg players), other ethnically offensive terms persist. For example, while the "N" word has been expunged from the official Scrabble dictionary, last I checked the term "jew" was included as a verb. Trust me: that is offensive.
