Double OT - running up scores in sport

PC seems to come from oversensitivity (BTW, hearing about the background of the Polish jokes and Polish expressions, I don't think anymore that is a case of oversensitivity).
I have been wondering about what I see as oversensitivity in sports - noting that in the USA, there is an aversion against running up a score, which I don't see in Europe. F.i., in soccer, Dutch competition, PSV recently beat Feijenoord 10-0. You can be sure that the public was clamoring for that, shouting 'Tien! Tien! Tien!' long before. A lot of the American comments suggest that is unsportsmanlike. Same when Portugal beat North Korea in the world championship. I am wondering where this US aversion for high scores is coming from? In a way, it also does not fit my impression about American culture, which I think tends to be harder, 'no mercy' relative to European culture.
I think the European norm would be to win by as large a margin as possible.
