Interesting. How about entertaining the public, throwing a spectacle that attracts publicity/sponsors? Get more money in the game/sport? Maxing the value of the players? If the game is won, why not take care of these as well?

BTW, in the Dutch national competition goal difference is the tiebreaker, same for the qualification round match between Portugal and North Korea so in both cases maxing the score is also good from the perspective of winning the competition. But it would also happen in cases where the score does not matter, e.g. Ajax - Red Boys Differdange 14-0 in a Europa Cup way back (added to Marco Van Basten's value in any case).
