I'm surprised that hit-and-split seems to win so much more often. To try to understand this position, I would first play around with the locations of Black's spare checkers. If you position them more flexibly and threateningly, does the safe play float to the top? A second set of variants can be generated by playing with Black's outfield blot. Try moving it around or safetying it. Finally, what happens if you move Yellow's 8pt spare to the 6pt and change the roll to 54? Looking at all these variations using XGR+ will surely teach you something. If you find anything, then please post what you learn so we can all benefit.
