I played around with this position a bit. It seems that almost any improvement in Black's position, such as moving one or both spares from Black's 4pt to Black's 6pt, or cleaning up Black's outfield blot, makes it too dangerous for Yellow to break anchor. So it seems reasonable to conclude that in "this type of position" (whatever that means), one should generally not break anchor at gammon save, but in this particular position the conditions are just barely favorable enough to enable the hit-and-split to win enough games to compensate for the extra gammons lost.
