I whoppered a similar decision recently...I rolled joker boxcars and spent a long time deciding on the best way to hit, when the right play was to just play safely, obtaining a crushing racing lead that virtually guaranteed a cash next turn. Attacking was overkill when it worked and lost the cash when it didn't; on the other hand, the quiet play was extremely efficient cubewise.
I think similar principles are at play in your position here. I should say that in my position, the right play (once pointed out) was much more obvious than in your position here, but I had a psychological blindspot. I second Stick's psychological advice about being wary of "automatic" hits.
