Losing the cash seems like a big consideration. I wonder if he dices say a 61 from the bar if it is better to have played 6/5 2/off or 6/5 6/4 and by how much. Note there is still some racing chance for the gammon the regular way after 6/5 6/4 then a 61 roll. After the double blot play is it possibly still too good if the checker on the 6 point got hit? On the dancing variations also relevant is that the immediate extra checker off is often given back on the next roll.

Why do you think the position is so implausible? There was an early loose hit on the ace point and it was covered with a 5. Then a blitz. The last few moves he was running off the gammon explaining why there might be so many on the 6 point.
