On the dancing variations also relevant is that the immediate extra checker off is often given back on the next roll.

Right. I still make the double blot play, but take back the "clearly best". At the next move it might still be correct to leave one or two blots, but afterwards who knows ?

Also right about the retrograde analysis, that stack on the 6 just looked like it had been contrived to make the big play correct.
