I haven't looked into this as much as I would like, but I've found that it's pretty tricky to develop simple rules of thumb for these positions. There are too many variables. Certainly shifting the anchor around will affect the cube action, but so will fiddling with the offensive position, the position of the blots, the pip count, etc. The best solution, as is often the case, may be to develop a good set of reference positions and measure the distance from the nearest one. But I think it's quite tricky to find the "right" set of reference positions. This quiz might be a starting point but it only scratches the surface.
