I'm not sure about the variance reduction. I think it might be O.K. to keep it. If the misevaluation is really enormous then maybe one should turn it off, but even "bad" variance reduction is usually better than no variance reduction at all. Average luck is still zero so the results won't be biased; it's just that the variance won't actually be reduced as much as it appears to be. Right?
