My defense against this backgame drew considerable scorn from my opponent

I asked who your opponent was because you likely don't care what your opponent thinks ... esp. if he's the type of opponent to 'scorn' you at the time.

The last two are not really backgames, of course.

Only the first position is actually a backgame. Positions #2 & #3 may become horribly timed backgames at best but they are not yet. Positions #4 & #5, two anchors or not, these are not backgames, these are 'my opponent has crunched games'.

Can XG's analysis be trusted in positions 1-5?

I have no idea how your opponent could scorn you in the first few positions. There are really only 2 plays to consider and they aren't that far apart. XGR+ agreed with my play in the 4 four problems so clearly it can be trusted. As for the 5th problem, whatever, play something, I'd slot the prime myself.
