I have no problem with clocks. However, if slow play is the main issue, then one possible compromise would be as follows: Everyone plays with clocks, but the first time you "lose on time" it doesn't count. The match continues to completion and is scored without regard to the clock. However, your subsequent losses on time do count. People who claim to play fast and do play fast will have to go through the motions of playing with a clock but will never have to worry about losing on time.

A side benefit is that slow people who claim to be fast will have their self-deception shoved in their face, much to everyone else's satisfaction.

By the way, "first time" here doesn't necessarily mean "first time at each tournament." If there's some way to track people from tournament to tournament, then the rule could be that someone who uses up their "free" loss on time at one tournament is then required to play with clocks for real at all future tournaments.
