Your scenario is an interesting one, but I think one can tinker with my proposal to fix that kind of problem. For example, one could decree that for certain "critical" games, such as the last couple of rounds of the top division of a tournament, the "free loss on time" doesn't apply.

As I understand it, one of the concerns is that novices will be scared off by clocks. Having tighter restrictions on the critical games shouldn't scare off any novices. And if by some chance a novice makes it that far and is rattled by the clock, well, too bad; if you want to win the big money then you have to play like a grownup.
