I think his criticism of the Elo system is mostly unjustified. It's not obvious to me that not counting bad results is an improvement, and it's not the Elo system's fault that good achievement does not increase the likelihood of being invited to prestigious tournaments enough. I agree that the I-don't-play-for-a-while strategy is a problem with Elo systems, I'm not sure how chess pros can afford to stick to this strategy though.

That said, I'm not at all opposed to counting achievements, instead of or complementary to Elo ratings. That is of course already done in the ABT and WBA, besides local clubs everywhere, and I wish Chiva good luck for becoming powerful enough to establish a world-wide hierarchical tournament structure as it exists in tennis.
