and why is hitting so clear?

Because your gammon losses cost you nothing extra, you're too far behind in the race to allow your opponent to run out, and you need to win the game?

you surely hit, but how?

This is kind of interesting. The standard play, 8/4*/2 leaves 12 shots. On top of those 12 shots there are 2 more, 64, that is still pretty good for your opponent. [43 not too shabby either] The biggest issue I see with this play that any entering four also makes life pretty rough for you. Sure, you have this turn to roll something that hit and covers or hits and makes the point, but you still have work to do.

Now the other hitting play, 6/4* 6/2. This leaves 8 more immediate hitters than the other play but as compensation it's a lot closer to gin than the other play when it works. The position of the opponent's spares is also noteworthy because now some of the entering and hitting numbers break his board. After 6/4* 6/2 we have [44 54 53 33] six of the hitters that crack the board. On top of that there are other hitting plays that near cracking the board unless your opponent rolls an escaping number next turn. [41 42 32 63]

This would be a tough play to make OtB but luckily for me I'd have plenty of time left since we have an 8 cube in this game. I'm not going to go through all the analysis but it feels like 6/4* 6/2 should win out in spite of the obvious 8 extra shots.
