Your play is the one I would choose in a heartbeat for the same reason. But I'll tell you having seen the bot play similar positions before I think it will end up playing to make the 1pt and put opp on the bar. I suspect it has a fair amount more gammons. As well even if you can't eek out a gammon you likely will end up with a cube especially if you can threaten the opponents second checker.
