However, like many others here, I don't think that XG's definition of "world class" should be taken as anything more than savvy salesmanship on Xavier's part. Everyone knows that flattering the customer is a good way to sell more product.

But if you raise the bar higher, then I doubt that one can become one of the world's best players without what you call a "chess-like approach" (i.e., studying large numbers of concrete positions, as opposed to solely relying on a few general principles).
