How might you define world class for other contests? In general I think a minimum condition is the idea of being competetive at the highest level. So for basketball for instance that means being good enough to be a starter or a 25+ minutes plus player on a solid NBA team. Saying about 5 per NBA team and some foreign league players who would probably qualify gives 200. If you want to take a % there are a lot more basketball players in the world than backgammon players.

For soccer it means something like being good enough to be a starter for a national team good enough to qualify for the world cup. Again a few 100 and again way more soccer players than backgammon players in the world.
