I see. I think perhaps you're underestimating how much your accumulated knowledge of positions, gained through play, is the equivalent of knowledge that can be gained through studying specific positions. You've been exposed to lots of positions, and have developed some facility (employed consciously or not) in categorizing and comparing types of positions, even if you have not devoted time to memorizing specific reference positions. I grant that one can come to play at a reasonably competitive level without a whole lot of study (books, reference positions, exploring alternate positions, discussion), but, thinking of players I have known who have progressed mostly through over the board play, I'd say that they would have progressed faster and further if they'd done more rigorous studying, and memorizing of reference positions.
