Ok, perhaps I am your freak example because that's exactly what I do. I analyze thousands of positions from matches I play, and I attempt to absorb features and hone my ability to look at similar positions and apply the right reasoning - I develop a deep experience base, but I commit almost nothing to memory. I have a lousy memory. Sure I remember some openings and a few other extremely common situations, but I do not have a set of reference positions sitting in my head or in a file somewhere.
