Pre-bot books worth reading?

The fish book is certainly a brilliant piece of work. I think the reason it hasn't been developed further is that the next logical step is very difficult. Namely, one needs to model other aspects of weak human players. Not all weak players are alike. Some are good at attacking but weak at defense while others are the other way around. The crowd I mostly play with tends to be overly afraid of splitting the back checkers or breaking anchor or running, preferring to hang on to deep anchors. How do you adjust your checker play and cube action according to the peculiarities of your particular opponent? This is a lot harder than just fiddling with the MET.
