Bill, we may live on opposite sides of the pond, but in the event we ever do play each other in a tournament or otherwise, I would be delighted to agree to use a clock provided you agreed to use either the Meyer Dice Tube or a baffle box - both of which I would supply. This of course, applies to anybody.
There IS enough time to flip the tube and put it down before dice hit the bottom - usually also to let go of it. Unlike with the techniques of a skilled dice mechanic, the act of disturbing dice at the bottom of the tube would tend to be rather obvious; if not blatantly so. They would also demand lightning relexes. I really believe that the degree of difficulty of doing this, and without detection would be much greater than with rolling from cups.
I have done tests on the speed of using the tube compared with rolling from a cup. Allowing one second spent shaking dice in a cup (about an average time for most players) I found that the tube was TWO whole seconds per move faster. I believe that this means that players can expect to play an extra game of backgammon every hour.
