Tip: don't take Stick's trash talk seriously.

In all three positions, similar principles are at work, but one has to weigh the factors quantitatively: how many shots do you leave and how bad is it to get hit, versus how much you gain in flexibility and future safety if you're missed. Pattern matching should alert you to what tradeoffs you should be considering, but calculation is often needed to figure out which way the scale tips.
