Tom: Well, we surely don't want to be giving anyone extra penalties ;)

Tim: Define your objective: what do you want an ER calculator to do? That's a "matter of taste," if you want to call it that. Then devise a method that accomplishes that objective. That's not a matter of taste, unless, as I see it, you believe that all methods are equally good.

My objective would be something like: find a way to rate player error such that rating differences in ER meaningfully correlate with differences in win rate (preferably, I think, such that comparisons of ER's don't depend on absolute ER).
