There are only 3 plays to consider in this position. Making the 3 pt, the pure backgame oriented 9/5 8/3x and the other attack 21/15x 7/3x.

Take a look at your suggestion of 21/16 9/5 !! Why break a key backgame point and let your opp pound you all over the place? A backgame with 3pts in the opps board is quite strong unless horribly timed. Your play often lets you opp attack and this may result in getting put into a 5-3 backgame that is extremely likely to lose a G if you don't hit a shot.

Surely almost any legal play here is superior to 21/16 9/5. If you make one of my 3 suggested plays you may even be a fav here, but after your choice you're 1 bad sequence away from being cubed.
