Not sure if you´re right by stating that backgammon´s popularity is steadily dropping.
I think it´s important to focus not only on what has happening so far in Europe and the USA in matters of backgammon, but also look further and deeper.
When backgammon was "popular", we had only a few nations involved. Today, we have regular players from more nations. Nowadays, we have Japanese, Danes, Swedes, Turks and others to add to the US, Brits and German players. Croatia has joined the game, Bosnia has joined the game, Peru has joined the game, Greece has joined the game. The monthly tournaments of ISTAVDER in Istanbul have more than 200 players competing and playing modern backgammon with international rules and by international standards (NB: no money prizes can be paid in Turkey due to legal restrictions). Just because some of the established tournaments which have been around for decades suffer from attendance doesn´t necessarily mean that backgammon is dead.
It will take time for the new nations to fill the gap and to reach the same level and reach the "traditional" modern backgammon countries, but bots are helpful for that purpose and we already see some success here and there (see results of 3rd Cyprus Open).
