The fact that more countries add to US, UK and German should increase the total number of backgammon players. Under normal circumstances given that geographical/nation expanding we would expect more players attending major international tournament. I don't feel that this is the case (you know better if attendance is increased or decreased compared to 10/20 years ago). To be honest I don't know if popularity is still decreasing but I do know that it is rather low (in a worldwide scale).

You mentioned Turkey, Croatia and Greece were apart from modern backgammon people play some "traditional" variations. I do believe that if handled properly those countries can give some boost to the game. However that is not the case yet: In Greece for example almost all people know how to play the "traditional" variation (like backgammon without the cube) but in the monthly backgammon tournament the attendance is hardly 30 players!
