I agree with you 100% on the views of the casual player. Most people think of backgammon the same way they think of Parcheesi; it's more or less a kid's game where you throw your dice and move your mice. I had the same thought you did as well: Deep Blue hardly killed the chess scene. People generally do not mind that a computer can do something far more perfectly than they can. It is only the top-flight player who is consumed with the desire to be the absolute best in the universe.
