I think backgammon needs different approach. Approach so far was guys with some cash who think backgammon is mainly luck and they try to gamble. Ofcourse, worldclass-expert players (acording to bot analysis) seem to clean them out easily. Ofourse, after some time, you don't see them again.
But, there is lot of players who invest some time to this game (perhaps 1 serious student on every 500.000 inhabitants). so, there is a room for people that like this game, to play this game on various tournaments, just like chess, bridge or go where also there is no BIG money.
Take badminton. Maybe 30-50 badminton players earn very big money (top pros) but there are mainly $40 fee tournaments with some sponsor added money (up to $5000 prize fund) and international average players seem to travel to these tourneys..maybe one day hoping to become top pro or just because they like this game.
Ofcourse, problem for BG is this game is Amateur game. and Amateur players don't seem to have alot of free time to travel due to the work commitments.
But, for the future of BG, there needs to be some system which will enable top 50-100 or so players to actually live out of this game. Then, new generations of young players will come, so they can see with some work and practice they can achieve same goal - become top pro.
One BG Giant told me, he would be very happy to broke even on tourneys after he pays travel-accomodation etc. in a year. this is ofcourse very bad for new players to know. Why would anyone bother to invest alot of time if he cannot win enough money to earn for living. So, now only enthusiast who are in love with the game play or top gamblers who constantly seek out for fish heads up.
