Mentally there are things that fire up the few neurons I haven't killed off yet. Off the top of my head:

• My opponent has one blot in his home board and has made no other new inner board points. (even more true when I have made a bigger board)
• My opponent has two or more blots in his home board regardless of the size of his board.

When I notice either of these I make sure the auto-pilot is turned off and look for what we might consider non-standard plays.
