the solution of backgammon

In a Simborg interview, Danny Kleinman predicted that backgammon would continue to shrink in popularity because "the more that is known about a game, the less popular the game becomes."
I seem to recall Bill Robertie saying something like "backgammon is just as popular as it should be," but I can't find a cite -- ring any bells?
Frenchman Arnaud Mattern won the Doubles at the 2nd Lucien Barriere tournament in 2004, and the 10th Championship of France at the 3rd Aix-les-Bains tournament in 2007. In 2007 pokernews.com reported that "Out of more than 500 total entrants into the inaugural PokerStars.net European Poker Tour Prague Main Event, it was French backgammon master Arnaud Mattern who emerged victorious, claiming €708,400 in his first-ever EPT cash."
It's hard to compete with €708,400.
