No, as in "no", that wasn't what I had been thinking.
No, as in, what's in in for me (Dubner). People have their own motivations. That's not to say he wouldn't do it, but why? Why not give him tremendous motivation? Reading that article made me think of a fantastic way to gain his active assistance in popularizing the game.
No, as in so what if it gets mentioned once in a while. They've written about it twice now in a few years. Were there surges in the game's popularity?
Sure, having backgammon mentioned periodically in one column is not a bad thing. But it won't have any significant impact on the popularity of backgammon in the US. (That's not to say that a multi-million dollar media campaign wouldn't). There are perhaps countless things that can be done simply and inexpensively (or at a net gain) that have the ability to have more effect on backgammon's popularity.
But, that's just my opinion.
