Dueller comes to mind. Not that it cheats but it is an example of how you can take 3rd party software (It could be a Backgammon Client) and interface it with another piece of software to automate moving etc. In many cases such software will analyze the graphics to find out the state of a match, and then mimic keyboard and mouse movements to make the move automatically.
I wrote a piece of software that did this for MSN Gaming Zone (Using GnuBG). It was more for kibitzing a match and then having GnuBG analyze a positon and put the output back on the table in the chat for commentary.
I know that such a program exists for Yahoo Games. It uses an old version of GnuBG's Neural Net and it will automatically play for you. At one time it was a commercial cheat product. And no, the GnuBG team didn't endorse or create it.
