I like the idea of sticking all players together with a modest entry fee. However, the idea of having everyone show up and playing a 5 point match where half of the players are eliminated after 50 minutes of play seems wrong. People came to play, not flip a coin.
I'd like to see some kind of slow death format, where people play short matches with several players until perhaps they've won 3 and qualify for the next round, or they've lost 2 and are out of the running for the main prize. Then take the advancers and repeat. With this method, each round advances 5 of every 16 players.
The nice thing about this kind of method is that 75% of the people in each round have managed to win at least one mini-match. Also, it levels the playing field somewhat as compared to Swiss since players who finish Round 1 with a 3-0 record, do not carry forward any advantage over players who finish Round 1 with a 3-1 record.
