In order to figure out what we can and cannot trust, I think we have to start by gathering data, which in my mind means rollouts of the same position by different bots.

The work done on the openings shows that collecting long rollouts of a bunch of related positions by different bots can yield valuable insights. Doing the same for weird backgame positions would surely be equally valuable. It's harder because the set of positions is not handed to us on a platter (as they are in the case of openings), and also because the rollouts may be less trustworthy on average, but that doesn't mean it's impossible or not worth doing.
