Chuck, you cannot look at those numbers without separating into number of donks and their individual chances :-)

The poker sweetspot at that time, was simply the donks really not having a good chance, but the field being totally bombarded with donks, so your donk-percentage was so high that you were almost sure a donk or two would make it the to final tables and thus the cameras.

But their chances was really low, so there were good value for the better players, keeping people in the game as they progress in strength.

If you took (almost any) backgammon tournament format, eg. a single knockout cup tournament with matches to 15 points, took the regular field you have today and then just stuffed in 10 times as many donks, you'd get the same effect. The good players would have unbelievable value, and the donks would almost certainly be represented at the final 8 or final 4, for everyone to see that donks have a chance in backgammon.
