Rollout 26% take point

In Response To: Rollout 26% take point (Bob Koca)

"My tables assume a take point which is 60% towards the Dead TP. 30% - (30%-23%) x .6 = 26%."

I use five different tables depending on whether it is gammonless, gammonish, recube, or 8 cube. The take point is not always calculated with the above method. The cubing criteria changes drastically per match score. The tables have been rigorously tested at various scores over several years. I constantly update the tables when I find a flaw. Paul recently presented a problem where I found my table to be flawed. I just played a game against XG where my decision was a blunder due to an error in one of my tables.

Those who can quickly do the necessary math to make cubing decisions with the standard backgammon method should continue. However, many of us just cannot remember the match equities. Or even if we could remember the equities, we could not perform the calculations in our head in a small amount of time. Especially if one plays online with a clock, one may not have sufficient time to perform the calculations. Thus, I developed tables which are relatively accurate (not precise) and easily remembered.

My tables are designed for early and mid-game cubing decisions. Most decisions occur during this time. The tables are sometimes inaccurate for late game decisions.

Your first example was a non-contact race. Normally, I do not use my tables for those decisions. I use percentage or Ward method.

In your second example, you argued that the take point was 25%, not 26%. I already admitted Chuck’s point that the take point of this problem was 25%, not 26%.

For all of you backgammon players who can read a backgammon table with a 1% uncertainty level, you are truly amazing. Most mere humans are pleased if we can estimate the GWC, take point, and doubling point within 2% to 3%. If I estimate within 2% to 3%, my tables will put me in the ballpark.
