In Response To: "study" drugs (Bob Koca)

1. Whether or not the TD agrees with current drug laws, the possession, distribution and sale of certain drugs is illegal in the USA. A TD certainly cannot do anything that would even appear to be suspending these laws in the playing room. However, requiring blood tests and posting drug-sniffing dogs in the hallways is not necessary to be on the right side of the law, any more than is fingerprinting us all to be sure he's not illegally harboring a fugitive from justice, or possibly receiving stolen money for our entry fees. I don't see the need for a tournament policy on these drugs except maybe a general statement of support for the laws of the tournament's jurisdiction, with no special mention of drugs.

2. If the person has a prescription, I will assume they need the drug, and the reason is none of my business unless the person "cares to share". This would apply also to players from other countries where drugs banned here are legal. An example is the Chinese ma huang, which some people consider to be "performance enhancing", and in small doses is a good anti-allergic and anti-asthmatic herbal remedy. In much larger than medicinal doses, as is true for many medications, it has many bad side effects, including possible death. These side effects were what led to its being banned here, but if a Chinese player is using this drug (presumably in safe, medicinal quantities) with a doctor's prescription, I don't see why any of us need to question whether he can take it during the tournament, nor why the prescription was written.

3. If a decision is made permitting this new kind of performance enhancers, hmmm, let me see what is growing in our field back by the tree line >>
