"study" drugs

The anti-doping organization's list of prohibited substances includes both performance enhancing drugs and substances which are generally illegal but whose performance enhancing attributes are not immediately apparent, including heroin and cannabinoids. The org's site mentions that caffeine used to be on the list and was taken off the list in 2004 because it was questionable whether caffeine enhanced performance at proscribed levels. I could not find any explanation of why cannabinoids are on the list or whether any studies indicate that use of cannabinoids improve performance in any sport. I noted that alcohol is not on the list, but some sports do ban alcohol. Archery and billiards, for example. But not, apparently, javelin throwing and chess (unlike backgammon, chess has a measure of recognition as a "sport" on the international level and in some (many?) countries.
Anyway, Bob, I think it's about as likely that universities start conducting urine tests of current students during final examinations to detect illegal use of Ritalin and Adderall, as testing their parents when they were in college for cocaine and amphetamine. In backgammon, I'd wait for the clinical trials showing that using "study drugs" improves backgammon Performance Rating before thinking too much about it.
But maybe placebos should banned; a recent study says they apparently can work even when you know they don't work.
