OfCourse,

Each country sets their own rules, example: in Croatia, official members of Croatian Olympic Committee are among others CHESS, BRIDGE and GO.

Usually, each country has some sort of list of sports which I refer as "official" recognition. In Croatia this list is NOMENCLATURE of SPORTS made by Croatian Olympic Commitee as state authorized national body for sports. This list include also non-olympic sports, members of SportAccord organization in Geneva.

If something is a sport, donations and sponsoring become easier as the state supports growth of sports. Also, games of chance are to be officially played only in casinos. However, there is no backgammon in casinos in Croatia. So, recognition of backgammon would make things easier on a legal plan.

However, main problem is lack of international and national organizations as regulators on the game of backgammon worldwide.
