Do you think the amount of money that the school makes from them important?

Colleges are non-profits that raise funds from numerous sources including tuition to fund their programs. If they can successfully raise funds through their athletic programs, they either reduce the need to increase tuition and other fundraising elsewhere, or they are able to invest in new programs or facilities. It seems wrong to ask other students to pay higher tuition so that the college can pay the salary of its star athletes.
