Let me give some arguments for 8/6 8/2* vs 13/7 13/11:
1. 13/7 13/11 leaves 4 more shots, but also leaves a second blot that could be picked up. That means that after getting 8/6 8/2 has more life after death.
2. 8/6 8/2* is ugly, but if missed often allows us to build a 4-point board, which can then afterwards be used to pick and pass. If we can keep XGR on the bar for one roll, then that will give us the tempo to release our checkers from the midpoint. Also in other tactical variations, a 4 point board will help a lot.
3. It may look like after 8/6 8/2*, miss, we are going to leave a lot of shots, but XGR would need to retain the back checker and the midpoint to generate all shots, and XGR does not have the timing for that. So will leave less future shots than that may appear now.
Points 2 and 3 do not mean that the position after 8/6 8/2* and not being hit is better than after 13/7 13/11 and not being hit, of course the latter is better for us. But the difference is not huge.
Our position is already ugly, and ugly positions often require ugly plays.
