Thanks for the quick reply. I misread your last comment. The way I understood your comment was: "This book about GO helped me to plan ahead and build a strategy in my play during a backgammon game".
And my point was: wouldn't an average chess player already have an idea/understanding of planning / looking ahead; and transfer this experience to other fields or games than chess.
And yes, I fully agree that a huge piece of mastery is about mastering the small things, the basics.
Falafel told me once in Paris: "If you have a player who plays a 4 or 5, and then later also plays an 8 or 9 here and there, then this player doesn't know the basics. He should study the basics if he wants to play at a high level consistently".
I bet that Falafel (also a chess player) knows a thing or two...
