Nactating irregular doublets

In Response To: Nactating irregular doublets (Matt Ryder)

It seems that 63R-33 played 13/10*, 8/5(3) should be nactated with an underlined O (given the 3:1 ratio), but might O imply 13/10(3)*, 8/5 instead? So is it o maybe?

It's the other way around. Follow the "most" (points) convention. 13/10(3)* 8/5 is O and 13/10* 8/5(3) is o. The first play makes/retains an extra point. (Btw, both plays are whopperish as you probably realize.)

The hierarchy of O works the same way as the hierarchy of O. (Capital, lower-case, capital italic, lower-case italic, then the same four characters emboldened if you ever have to dig that far.)

I imagine that most people will prefer to use assumption for complex doublet plays (at least at first), and there is almost always at least one decent assumptive choice. Here, for example, you can use L for 13/10* 8/5(3). The hit is assumed, and the only way you can Lift a blot is (to create another by) making the 5pt! (Also possible is numeral 5, but I won't get into that here.)

For the other play 13/10*(3) 8/5, I'd use $ for Slot. (Any non-entering non-forced portions are played down.)

51S-55 played 13/3, 8/3, 6/1* anyone?

I like H, which stands for Hit loose. For example, I used H for that very play here, here, here, here and here.

Because H always represents Hitting loose: "Thou shalt not cover the blot." Given that (very useful) commandment, making the 3pt and re-making the 8pt is vastly stronger than any other play (and obviously so).

Note that I'm interested in learning Nactation without assumption.

Understood. Until I finish the update, I'll continue to dispatch non-assumptive (strict usage) info for complex doublets as situations arise.

When both parts of a non-doublet, or all four parts of a doublet, are played to or within the outer board, the play is nactated D (Down). When all portions are played from outer to inner board, the play is J (Jump the bar). When all portions are played within the inner board, the play is I (Inside).

Some moves, such as your example 51S-55 played 13/8 8/3(2) 6/1*, are partly played in all three of the above ways. In such cases, the fourth portion of the move determines which of underlined D, I or J is used. In your case, 8/3 is the determinant; your move is therefore J.
