Hi all, and thanks for the gratz. I came home to a lost cable connection and just got it working again. Chiva assembled a good "hard-core" crowd of players for this tourney, despite the BG-fratricide problem with New York, the cruise and Santa Fe all being in the same month. He runs things a bit differently from other directors, but there's nothing wrong with that--as my mom used to say, "There's more than one way to skin a cat."
Chouette fans will be pleased to know that chouettes did break out frequently. Chiva brought plenty of boards, so no problems with anyone having to scramble to find a new one when the owner of the board in use decided to call it a night.
Howard Shirey will feel vindicated when he finds out that as Carter notes, I rolled a game-changing 22 from the bar in the second match of the final. He long ago came up with the idea that 22 from the bar is "my roll", which he later generalized to any 22 that plays at least half-decently, whether from the bar or not.
I don't believe it's possible to win two tourneys (with 44 and 32 players respectively) back to back without getting more than your share of luck. This game lends itself to big fluctuations in the factors beyond the players' control, causing a lot of scatter in the results. On the other side of the continuum, the best player in the room can lose in the first round of any given event, and we've all seen it happen.
This time it was my turn to benefit from a rising tide; at another event, it will be someone else's. If you want to find out if it's yours, well, you will have to attend and play in the tournaments!
