21S-42-64 (at gammon save)

Neil wrote "take a look at the position after 24/20 and you'll see that 23/21 is a hopeless blunder compared to 13/11".

I think I was unduly influenced by recently reading http://www.bgonline.org/forums/webbbs_config.pl?noframes;read=68363 where Nack favoured opening 43U at GS. This was news to me, although I do play 43U at DMP. For 21S-54S-42 I agree that the extra vulnerability makes 24/20 23/21 worse than 24/20 13/11.

In that post (from May 27, 2010), my final paragraph concluded:

"Therefore, unless I see some clear counterevidence (e.g., a XG 4-ply rollout with a lot of trials favoring Z over U at DMP and GS, and/or perhaps analysis that Snowie is misplaying replies to 43U more than other bots), I'm a supporter of U (as shown below) at both the dmp and gammon save scores."

A few days later, the counterevidence manifested! I never pay attention to XG 4-ply data (especially if the plays are rolled out only 5k or 10k) to the exclusion of all other data, but if one averages in that [Z D1 U9 D16] ^46 10 5 result any reasonable way into the mix, then opening 43U is not best at GS based on the information we have accumulated through today. In the bigger picture, though, it is close either way.

That said, even if 43U is best at gammon save, that's a long haul from U being competitive at 21S-54S-42-s (diagrammed above). Covering the 11pt (or, better yet, moving it to the 9pt to be covered), denying a direct 6-shot, is huge.

Stick, nactating S = 24/20 13/11 looks good to me. It's obviously not 13/9 24/22 or 13/9 23/21 (Z and z?).

That is correct for all three, if you match 13/9 23/21 to Z, and 13/9 24/22 to z. The leading back checker (which is closer to the 6pt) gets the capital.

Nack
