OTB I'd surely just have played 16/15(2) 7/6 19/18, which does almost everything you can hope for, diversifying in the back, blocking 66 as well as 55, and slightly improving the forward position adding 43 as a pointing number.
The drawback of the play is that my 8 point is only single-covered, allowing Black to stay on 51, 52, 53, 54.
16/14 16/15 7/6 increases the hitting numbers from 21 to 30 in this case. Also on 61 and 62 I get triple-cover instead of double cover, but this doesn't add much due to the extra covers from the back points (eg. on 61 hitting numbers go from 29 to 31, on 62 from 27 to 28).
The payoff is on 65 where my hitting numbers drop from 30 to 8, and 66 where they drop from 28 to 11.
So it seems, in these variations, I have gained 78 hitting variations (over 36*36), and lost 61, so it may be worth it. Furthermore, when black cannot jump I am better diversified, which adds value in almost half of all variations.
There is however a final flipside to the clever play - whenever I get hit there are more gammons. Thus I don't think the even more aggressive outfield coverage play 16/15 16/14 19/18 can be correct - not so much for passing up 7/6 which is not that valuable - but for also adding even more gammons to the bad variations.
But I actually believe that 16/14 16/15 7/6 is worth a try.
