Dealing with sandbaggers

Bill, you make some great points here. Before I give my opinion on this matter let me just clarify what happened in LA. I called MFIC when I was at O'Hare headed to my gate and grabbed the last spot in the Masters event. When I arrived at the tourney I was told by MFIC that Ralf Jonas wanted to play and was offering $100 cash for my spot. I really did want to play but at the same time realized I didn't have very good equity in this event as I would be one of the weaker players. I hemmed and hawed and finally decided to give him the spot, take the cash, and go have a nice sushi dinner. And yes he did win the event.

I have just recently started playing in Masters/Super Jackpot events. I have played in 3 or 4 and have not cashed in any. As a player, I still believe that depending on the tournament I should be allowed to play in the Limited JP's as I do not believe I am a top Championship Level player. I went to Vegas in April 09 and played the Limited JP and lost in the second round (but I did get to the Semis of the Main before losing to JOH at DMP). Because I have had some success in the past year (winning my first ABT event and a few other cashes) Howard told me I could not play in the Limited JP again. I really felt like that was unfair and decided to play in the Super JP not because I wanted to but because I was forced to (for the first time I kind of understood what some Intermediates that have been forced to move up have felt for some time). They ended up overselling the Super JP and Troy, who knows how bad I am at this game decided to let me move down to the Limited JP. Unfortunately I am a donkey and I lost in the first round.

Now I have to look at this issue as a tournament director as well. I have decided that I will allow Open players to play in the Limited JP but not "Top Championship level players". I have had discussions with other TD's and some believe that once someone wins a Limited JP or Intermediate Tournament then they should move up the following year. I personally do not agree with this stance. There are factors a TD must consider when deciding if a player should be allowed to play in a Limited JP such as the cost vs the cost of the Masters/Super JP, the strength of the field in both events, & the number of entrants in both events. I am sure there are other factors I cannot think of at this time. But as a TD I will not allow someone to play below his/her level if it is clear to me that this person is sandbagging. It just wouldn't be fair to the rest of the players.
