Dealing with sandbaggers

1. Money considerations should never trump fairness to all the rest of the players.

2. Convenient brackets without delays that could be caused by 2 or 3 late-comers is clearly better for the masses and the entire tournament and should be the more important consideration. People who enter late should have no problem simply being told they are too late. If you do that consistently, they won't be late in the future.

3. If the TD states in front that the entries are limited to 32 or 16 etc., as he should, then there is no problem turning away people who enter too late.

4. If the TD states in front, as he should, that entries must be received by X time, then no one should be allowed to enter after that time.

I believe the above solves all the questions you asked and maintains fair play and a smooth tournament. I also believe that none of the above is "brain surgery" and is subject to a lot of debate.

HOWEVER, if I were tournament director and I had 31 entrants and the time was up, I might well make an announcement and try to get one more player so that no one has a bye--the TD should have some leeway to change the above if he thinks it makes for a fairer event.
